Anna Frey became an internet sensation about a year ago when observers noted her striking resemblance to San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Brock Purdy. This initial fame propelled her into the social media spotlight, amassing over two million followers on TikTok. However, in recent times, Anna Frey’s burgeoning popularity is increasingly attributed to her remarkable talent and achievements in tennis, rather than just her familiar appearance. It’s been a truly transformative year for this young tennis prodigy from Utah.
“It’s been crazy, just a lot of tennis, lots of tournaments,” Frey remarked in an interview. “Obviously, social media is still a part of my life, but it’s not nearly as intense as it once was, which is actually quite nice.”
While her social media presence initially grabbed headlines, Anna Frey, who is currently 17 years old, has been diligently honing her skills on the tennis court, proving herself to be more than just a viral look-alike. A significant milestone in her tennis journey occurred in August. At a prominent tournament in Cleveland, just a tier below the prestigious Grand Slam events, Anna achieved a stunning victory against Tamara Korpatsch, a player then ranked 108th in the world.
“It was so much fun,” Frey recounted, her enthusiasm palpable. “I had the incredible experience of playing in front of a massive crowd, with everyone cheering me on.”
This victory was more than just a personal triumph; it marked her entry into the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings. Anna Frey now holds a WTA ranking of 824, a testament to her hard work and growing prowess in professional tennis.
Anna Frey on the tennis court, focused and determined
Looking towards the future, this high school junior, at the age of 17, has strategically planned her pathway to elevate her tennis career. Anna has made a commitment to play for the University of North Carolina (UNC) starting in 2026.
“I am incredibly excited about it,” Frey shared. “North Carolina has been one of my dream schools since I was little. I believe transitioning to a new training environment will be beneficial. Having lived here my entire life, I’m eager to further enhance my game at UNC.”
Her affiliation with UNC extends beyond the court, encompassing a Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal with the university. Furthermore, Anna’s marketability as both a tennis player and influencer has attracted international endorsements, including partnerships with renowned companies Fila and Head. This is indeed a favorable era for female athletes.
“I believe women’s sports are currently experiencing tremendous growth,” Frey observed. “Coupled with the advancements in the NIL landscape, it’s truly an opportune time for female athletes.”
While social media may have been her initial claim to fame, and remains a significant aspect of her life, Anna Frey’s current priorities are firmly rooted in her blossoming tennis career. She still appreciates the engagement with her fanbase and brand collaborations.
“I recently received a huge package of Nerds candies,” Frey mentioned with a laugh. “Though my siblings have already devoured most of it, I barely got any!”
As Anna Frey’s star continues to ascend both in the digital realm and on the tennis court, she aspires to inspire young girls to embrace the sport of tennis.
“I sincerely hope so,” Frey expressed. “That’s my aspiration. I want to encourage others to play tennis. I’ve met many young girls who are tennis players, and they are genuinely the sweetest.”
This young athlete, Anna Frey, age 17, is carving out a unique and inspiring path, demonstrating that she is a force to be reckoned with, both online and in the world of competitive tennis.
